Webring FAQ
Webring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do the links on a typical Webring site work?

The links on each site are created from the "HTML fragment" (HTML code that is added to the site).  They provide a means for the WebRing database to know what site the user is coming from, and where they want to go.(i.e., next site, prev site, etc....).
What's the difference between the "Ring" and the "Queue"?

The Queue is where ALL applicant sites go first, to receive a site ID prior to being entered into the Ring database. The Ring is where approved sites are placed. Please note that while your site is in the queue, it will not be on display to the general public. Only the site's owner and the ringmistress will see it.
What's an "HTML fragment" and what's it for?

The "HTML fragment", also called the "ringcode", is code which provides a means for the WebRing database to know which site within the ring the user is coming from, and where the user wants to go. When the user clicks on one of the links (i.e. "next", "prev" & "random", etc.), WebRing searches the database for the correct information, then sends the user to the URL of the next site in the Ring.
Where do I put the ringcode on my site?

You MUST insert the ringcode on the FIRST page (i.e. index.html or home.html) of your site. Sites which bury the code on their links page will be rejected.

I think my site fits the theme of ring but it was rejected - why?

1. Your site may have been rejected because the image quality was poor, or because the site was difficult to navigate. People who visit your site want to see how beautiful your wire art is, so work on making your images larger and more detailed, fast loading and make the information easy to read and find.

2. The ring is focussed on showcasing artisans who have achieved a high level of originality and fine craftsmanship. If your work has not yet achieved that level, we encourage you to continue to develop your skills and to create your own designs. If you are  producing work primarily from published sources, your site is likely to be rejected, no matter how beautifully crafted it is.  The intention is not to be elitist, just to ensure that the work being included in the ring is the best it can possibly be.

3. Your site includes craft or manufactured items other than wire art jewellery or sculpture. This ring is for wire artists who want to display their portfolio or catalogue of work, and is not intended to promote non-wire craft items, supplies, tools, etc. If you would like to be included in the Wire Artists webring, please consider setting up a separate site dedicated exclusively to your wire art jewellery.

4. The ringcode does not appear on your index (home) page. Webrings are useless if they buried deep within your website,    so PUT THE CODE ON THE FIRST PAGE OF YOUR SITE. To keep the webring banner from cluttering up the design of your page, just insert it further down.

Please don't take a rejection as the be all and end all - you are welcome to submit your site for consideration again in the future when it meets the criteria for the ring.
How do I cut and paste the ringcode onto my site?

While it is possible to use FrontPage or other web authoring tools to insert your webring code, YOU MUST INSERT THE CODE IN "SOURCE" MODE, NOT WYSIWYG MODE.

The simplest way to add the code to your site is to use a text editor such as notepad on your windows system to cut and paste the webring code and insert it onto your webpage. Otherwise, you may find the results disappointing or you may not be included in the ring right away. If in doubt, hire a professional or ask a web-savvy person to do it for you.
